Have you ever wanted to meet a vampire? What is a vampire? Are vampires real?
These are some of the questions asked by todays youth. Why don't we explore the answers to these questions. First we want to know what a vampire is. Is it the scary, movie version, or is it something else?
The definition of a vampire is generally the same wherever you look, but there are a couple of meanings. Vampire(as defined by two prestigous encyclopedias): in folklore, a corpse that rises from its grave at night in search of human victims to satisfy its craving for blood. At dawn it returns to its grave. A vampire can be warded off with religious charms and certain herbs, but can only be desroyed by fire or a wooden stake driven through its heart.
It was also believed that people bitten by vampires would, after death, become vampires themselves. Other definitions
state that vampires are malign spirits that refuse to join the ranks of the dead, and take possession of a body so that they can continue to enjoy the pleasures of the living.
Have you ever wondered if vampires are real or not? I
have. I looked, and believe it or not they are! Oh, I don't mean the ones you see in the movies. Those are just interpretations of old folk stories that have been passed down. No I mean the "Real" or "living" vampires. They most often believe they are born vampires, or transformed by other "living" vampires. Most of these people are between the ages of seventeen and twenty-eight, but there are a few in their mid-forties.
These people often felt they didn't fit in, or that they were outsiders as children so they turned to the ideals of the fictional vampire. Some also say they came fromunhappy, abusive environments.
When someone wants to become a vampire, he/she seeks out other living vampires. To become a vampire he/she has to go some-times sex. After the rituals the convinced initiate undergoes several changes, such as: preference of nocturnal hours, aversion an aquired taste for blood. Some also believe they aquire super-normal strength and abilities, and the their body is no longer entirely human, although they refuse a physical exam for proof.
If you want more information on vampires two books that
I strongly suggest are: The Vampire Book: the encyclopedia of the undead, and The Complete Vampire Companion: legend and lore of the living dead.
