This is a true story, it happened to my father-in-law last night, and he called us this morning to tell us about it. Remember, I’m telling this second-hand, so the details and exact dialog is in question, nut the events are as relayed to me by my father-in-law.
My father-in-law owns a bar in Waco, TX. Last night, among the normal patrons, they got one particular guy. This guy orders a beer, sits down by a couple other patrons, and begins to chat, saying things like “you may not remember me, but I used to come in with so-and-so back when you were located such-place.” All well enough. My father-in-law then stepped in to the back room. When he did so, suddenly someone from the front yelled: ”Hey, he just stole the tip jar!”
Sure enough, the particular guy had grabbed the tip jar (with about $75 in it) and ran out the door. On his way out to the parking lot, the guy yelled something to the effect of “Ha ha! Catch me if you can!” to a patron standing outside. This patron happens to be a police officer who was off-duty at the time, and he immediately gave chase.
So this guy is high-tailing it with an off-duty cop, my father-in-law, and another patron and friend on is tail. The thief jumped a wooden fence behind a gas station, and at this time apparently grabbed a fistful of cash from the tip jar, then tossed the rest away. Around this time, a police officer happened to be passing by in his patrol car, and stopped to see what was going on. The off-duty officer clued the on-duty officer in, and they both dashed after the thief, through the fence. Meanwhile, my father-in-law (who can’t run very much) and his friend decided to loop around the gas station. When they got there, they spotted the thief strolling out from behind the building.
The friend said something like “Hey, wait! We want to talk to you!”
The thief, startled, yelled “I didn’t do it! I didn’t take it!” and sprinted across the street to the parking lot of a grocery store. The friend caught up to him here, and tackled him (ouch!)
The police officers took the man into custody, and then located the tip jar behind the gas station.
Business at the bar went back to usual.
Later that night, at the police station, the officers found $15 dollars from the tip jar stuffed down the man’s pants. This was returned at about 4AM this morning.
