TOWNSEND PARK NORTH ELEMENTARY SET TO PUBLISH BOOKS BY STUDENTS
By Ezra Mann/OF THE COMMERCIAL STAFF
When most people think of great authors they may think of Mark Twain or C.S. Lewis. When Dr. Earnestine Roberts thinks of writers she believes she needs to look no further than her own students.
Roberts is principal of Townsend Park North Elementary School.
For the third year, Roberts is overseeing 13 classrooms where students write, design and illustrate their own books. Teachers and students started discussing possible topics Friday and have until Jan. 23 to finish their books.
Kristi Caldwell, a third grade Townsend Park teacher, said her class began working on ideas for their book’s topic and title “We Like to Party in the Classroom.”
“Watching the kids come up with ideas on the topic and concentrate on the process makes it all exciting,” Caldwell said.
Roberts said that each child gets an opportunity to write as well as illustrate a page. Previous topics have been pets, poetry and being a millionaire.
Vincent Farris, a third grader in Caldwell’s class, was excited to be a part of the process.
“When you make a draft, you won’t mess up and it looks good on paper,” Vincent said.
The books will be 52 pages and 240 students will participate in making them, Roberts said.
Students will take flyers home Tuesday to let their friends and families know about their work. Once the books are published, students tend to read them more than those in the library.
“It promotes more reading, writing clearly and when they see it’s for a purpose, it’s not hard to get them to do it,” Roberts said.
Eliza Newby, a third grader in Caldwell’s class, said she enjoys writing and putting together pictures for the publication. She said she wouldn’t mind doing more writing in the future and plans to take advantage of the opportunities.
“It’s going to be awesome,” Eliza said.
The books, which are being printed by Nationwide Studentreasures of Topeka, Kan., will need to be ordered by Jan. 29. Although the books won’t be free, they will only cost $14.95.
Anyone interested in purchasing a copy should notify the school by Jan. 29. Roberts said the books should be ready in mid February. Details: Call the school at 575-0709.
